You know how it can be frustrating to build a new business or get a new career in sales started?

A lot of times the big struggle is to get positive attention, keep that attention and then convert it into actual results like SALES & INCOME GROWTH!

I’d like to tell you a story.

In 2008, like many of the world's largest companies and banking institutions, General Motors was teetering on going out of business. It had been a very challenging couple of years for GM and its dealer body.

My wife, Mary, and I owned and operated a 52-year old family dealership with the Pontiac, GMC and Isuzu franchises.

We had put every last penny into purchasing the dealership after my grandfather passed away. We liquidated our savings accounts, our 401k accounts and our investments to put it all into the purchase of the business...and we took out an interest-only loan privately for the rest.

It was a real high-wire gig for us, but we were chasing my dream of being a GM Dealer. And...for more than a few years, things were fun and profitable.

We were paying a staggering rent factor, but making a go of it all in the first few years in spite of declining GM market share nationally and in our market even more so.

By the end of 2007, GM was really struggling, and that meant that so were we.

We began struggling, but persevered and persisted, as we did not want to ever give up on our dream, succumb to defeat or disappoint our 50+ associates, many of whom had been with us for 3 generations and decades of tenure.

Throughout that ordeal, although I hadn't been aware at the time, I was learning some invaluable life and business lessons. Many that I share throughout all my coaching programs that I ultimately created from these experiences.

It literally saved my life.

In February of 2009 General Motors entered into federal bankruptcy. At the time, it was the largest automotive bankruptcy filing in US history and remains so to this very day. An $82B disaster that crushed many in its path. Including Mary, my two kids and I.

In short time, were picking up the pieces and flat broke in May of 2009.

As I sat in my 2004 Cadillac CTS with 66K miles on it, I reached into my pocket and removed the last of my cash on hand...I had 6 $1 bills neatly protecting the $5 bill inside them.

As I pushed the button to expose the change drawer on the lower left side of the dashboard where I kept my spare coins, I glanced to my left and spied the ominous Fedex package with the foreclosure documents on our house.

It was not my best moment. I was depressed and wanted to cave to the pressures...

I walked inside the back door of my home with tears streaming down my cheeks. I was broke, and moreover, I was broken. 

It was at that moment, as I entered the back door, that Mary met me and asked me what was wrong.

I explained my despair to her as best I could and her response changed everything for us.

She said 4 magic words to me..."I believe in you" and proceeded to challenge me to figure it out.

I hadn't heard those words in a long, long time. Certainly not from the man in the mirror..."I believe in you".

But that inspired me. I wiped the tears from my eyes and drove to the local Dunkin Donuts to gather my thoughts, develop a plan and figure it all out.

Little did I know, but that day began my journey to help anyone and everyone that I could, to find their confidence through a philosophy that focused on authenticity and the power of being the best, most productive version of themselves...

Early in my career, like many of us who are career Selling Professionals, I believed that successful Salespeople were just great "Closers" who possessed some incredible God-given talent or superpower that the rest of us mere mortals simply didn't have.

It was frustrating and demoralizing at times. 

They just carried themselves with a air of authority...Almost as if they simply expected everyone to say yes before they even had to ask for the sale.

I invested a lot of my time listening, observing and when the opportunity presented itself, I asked tons of questions. Little did I know that these actions that I instinctively took would become the building blocks of my massively impactful and game-changing systems.
